Volkswagen Passenger Cars prepares plants for the future

The Volkswagen brand is getting its Germany-based production network ready for the future. In a meeting, the Group Board of Management informed the Supervisory Board of the Volkswagen Group about its plans for vehicle allocation for the brand until 2028. By doing this, the company is setting itself up for profitable capacity utilization and economic success in the coming years. The brand’s performance program, ACCELERATE forward | Road to 6.5, emphasizes efficient vehicle allocation and increased productivity.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, highlighted the challenges faced by the industry during its transformation under difficult business conditions. He emphasized the importance of preparing individual plants and the Volkswagen production network in Germany for the future. The newly approved vehicle allocation plan will significantly contribute to building a strong, competitive VW brand.

Christian Vollmer, Board of Management member for Production and a member of the Extended Executive Committee for Production, stated that the transition to electromobility presents an opportunity to simplify production operations and increase plant efficiency. The company aims to streamline vehicle production by grouping vehicles based on the same architecture across all brands. This approach will save costs associated with integrating different vehicle architectures and enable plants to produce multiple models using the same technical basis.

Daniela Cavallo, General Works Council Chairwoman, expressed satisfaction with the decisions made regarding domestic vehicle manufacturing VW plants. The company and the Works Council worked together to find solid solutions that maximize factory utilization and provide clarity for the workforce. The planning round and performance program will now proceed to the next stages.

In addition to the ID.3, which will be ramped up in 2023, the plant in Wolfsburg will produce a second electric model. Starting in 2026, a high-volume all-electric SUV for the A segment is scheduled to be manufactured. The plant will also produce the popular Golf and the new Tiguan generation, ensuring its stable utilization. The successor model of the Tiguan Allspace will be produced at the Wolfsburg main plant starting in 2025. Instead of building an additional plant in Wolfsburg Warmenau, new electric models based on the SSP architecture will be integrated into existing and modernized structures at the main plant, to be introduced at the end of the decade. The Volkswagen icon Golf will also transition to electric power on the SSP basis. The Trinity vehicle project, originally planned for Wolfsburg, will now be assigned to the Zwickau plant.

The Osnabrück plant will continue its partnership with Porsche and produce the Arteon and T-Roc convertible, in addition to combustion vehicles.

The previous planning will remain unchanged for all other German and international locations of the Volkswagen brand.
