Work “well advanced” on radical new Vauxhall Insignia for 2025

The next-generation Vauxhall Insignia will be significantly different from its predecessor, according to Florian Huettl, CEO of Vauxhall parent brand Opel. Huettl revealed at the Munich motor show that the company is currently in advanced stages of conceptual work on a replacement model, which will be an all-electric car arriving after 2025.

The new Insignia will not be a traditional D-segment car like its predecessor. Instead, it will be developed further to align with the evolving market. The car will feature a more aerodynamic design, offering versatility and increased charging capacity. It will deviate from the standard D-segment car concept.

According to Autocar, the next Insignia is expected to be a rakish and premium crossover, with a higher ride height compared to the previous saloon model, but not a full-blown SUV. It will likely share a similar concept to its Stellantis siblings, the Peugeot 408 and Citroën C5 X.

The new Vauxhall, which may not bear the Insignia name due to limited visual similarities with its predecessor, will be built on Stellantis’s new STLA Medium architecture. This architecture will be one of two used for future Vauxhall models, including the Corsa and Mokka, with the other being the STLA Small. The STLA Medium architecture will also underpin the Astra and higher-tier models.

Huettl stated that these architectures would allow for electric vehicles with a range of up to 435 miles, 25-minute charging from 20-80% battery capacity, reduced weight, four-wheel drive through a second electric motor at the rear, and lower costs. Vauxhall aims to price electric Corsa models around €25,000, excluding any government incentives.

Vauxhall has reiterated its plan to exclusively launch electric-powered cars from 2025 and transition all models to be electric-only by the end of 2028. The remaining two models to be launched with multiple powertrain options, including EVs, are replacements for the Crossland and Grandland, scheduled for next year.

While Huettl confirmed that the Corsa name will remain unchanged, he suggested that the replacements for the Crossland and Grandland may have different names. Spy pictures of the Crossland indicate a significant change in size and positioning within the B-segment.

The production plans for the Vauxhall Experimental concept car, which made its debut at Munich, remain uncertain. Huettl described the concept as a model that paves the way for a new generation of Opel and Vauxhall vehicles. He hinted that future production models will incorporate many features seen in the concept car.
