Toyota has made significant progress in this area, developing hydrogen-powered engines such as the 1.6-liter Yaris and the 5.0-liter V-8 from the Lexus RC-F, in collaboration with Yamaha. These engines retain the power and performance of their petrol counterparts, with minimal modifications required. This means that existing production lines and engine designs can be used, further benefiting the environment. In the future, Toyota may even offer hydrogen conversion kits for petrol-powered vehicles, allowing classic car enthusiasts to keep their beloved machines on the road without the need for costly conversions or excessive road taxes.

However, there are some downsides to hydrogen engines, specifically related to the storage of hydrogen. The fuel requires large tanks, reducing interior space in vehicles, and it is highly flammable, necessitating leak-proof and durable storage systems. Once these storage challenges are addressed, the installation of hydrogen fuel stations could be more straightforward compared to EV chargers, as they can utilize existing infrastructure for normal fuels.

How has your experience been as the Managing Director of Range Rover so far?

“It has been amazing. It has been intense with a lot happening. We recently revealed the Range Rover Sport SV three weeks ago, and now the Evoque. We have incredible launches and a wide scope of products. Additionally, there are ongoing transformations, electrification, and management of different brands. There is a lot going on, making it super intense but also very exciting.”

What are your priorities as the Managing Director of Range Rover?

“It is still early days – only two months in – so it’s difficult to determine my specific goals. Currently, I am focused on familiarizing myself with the organization and meeting everyone. I want to understand everyone’s thoughts and feelings about the direction we are heading.

“One of my main priorities is definitely electrification. In my speech, I mentioned the Range Rover fully electric, and that was a genuine factor that influenced my decision to take on this role. I believe it is a significant milestone for the company and for the overall electrification movement. Being able to drive a fully electric Range Rover, especially considering its size as an SUV, is truly amazing.

“Therefore, ensuring we get the electric version right and successfully launching it, while ensuring our customers and clients understand its value, is crucial. I want to delve into the details of all our products and familiarize myself with the organization, but with a particular focus on the Range Rover Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) that will be coming soon.”

Next-Gen BMW M5 Looks Aggressive In Rendering Based On Recent Spy Shots

The next-generation BMW M5 is still under development, as the latest spy shots from a couple of days ago still show a heavily camouflaged sedan doing the rounds at the Nurburgring.

However, that hasn’t stopped internet-famous car designer X-Tomi from imagining what the next iteration of BMW’s performance sedan could look like, taking inspiration from the images we published as the work week drew to a close.

With styling cues borrowed from the X5 M and X6 M, X-Tomi’s rendering shows a bright red M5 sitting on signature black M wheels and wearing an X-shaped front end that incorporates a black grille with a red outline.

The hood looks very similar to that used on the M4 coupe and the sensor for the radar-guided cruise control sits in the lower part of the front bumper, which is a much better placement than BMW used on the regular 5 Series, where there was an attempt to integrate it in the double-kidney grille, but it’s hard not to notice it once you get a glimpse of it.

The front fenders are also wider than on the run-of-the-mill 5 Series, which is to be expected, considering the M5 will most certainly have wider wheels, as well as beefier brakes.

 

With this being a fan rendering, some unknowns remain, such as the powertrain that will motivate the seventh-generation BMW M5. Currently, the Bavarian performance sedan is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque in Competition trim.

Rumors say that the next-generation M5 will use the hybrid setup of the XM SUV, so a twin-turbo V8 and a single electric motor that make a combined 644 hp and 590 lb-ft in the base variant and 738 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque in the XM Red Label.

This information hasn’t been confirmed, but we’re pretty sure that BMW will try to one-up the current-gen M5, as well as the electric i5 M60 which packs a dual-motor setup making 590 hp and 549 lb-ft.
