2024 Porsche Panamera Prototype First Drive Review: Cruise Controller

The new 2024 Panamera is impressive, but one question remains: is it still necessary? After all, the Taycan is also fantastic, offering comfortable seating for four or five people, stylish design, and excellent handling. So why does Porsche need to introduce a new Panamera?

Well, despite its greatness, the Taycan has a limited range. According to the EPA, it can only travel just under 250 miles on a single charge (although real-world testing often proves this figure to be too pessimistic). On the other hand, the current Panamera can travel nearly twice that distance on a full tank of gas, which can be refilled in just a few minutes.

For a car like the Panamera, this is a significant advantage. The third-generation Panamera not only offers sportiness and fun, but it is also exceptionally comfortable, even more so than its predecessor. It is a car that you would want to use for long trips, covering more miles than any of Porsche’s EVs can achieve on a single charge.

Therefore, while the Taycan is an excellent option for those who frequently embark on shorter trips, the Panamera still serves a purpose in Porsche’s product lineup, giving it another generation. However, there is a concern that this might be the model’s last hurrah. The reality is that the Taycan outsold the Panamera in the U.S. last year by a significant margin. If this gap continues to widen, the Panamera’s third act may indeed become its swan song.
