BMW Partners with Frieze Seoul to Present Inaugural Frieze Music Seoul

Munich/Seoul. From September 6 to 9, Frieze Seoul will host its second edition of the internationally renowned art fair in Asia at COEX in Gangnam. With over 120 leading galleries from around the world, including local exhibitors showcasing Asian art, the fair promises to be a major event. One of the highlights of this year’s program is the first-ever Frieze Music Seoul, made possible through a partnership with BMW. The event will feature a live performance by the acclaimed musician Colde. BMW, a long-standing global partner of Frieze since 2004, will provide VIP car service and present “The Electric AI Canvas” exclusively for the fair at the BMW Lounge.

To celebrate their ongoing collaboration, BMW is partnering with Frieze to bring the inaugural edition of Frieze Music to Seoul. On September 8, at S-Factory in the Seongsu-dong district, musician Colde will perform live, joined by special guests APRO, Khakii, and DJ Conan from the artist’s label Wavy. Colde, a South Korean singer-songwriter, is known for his unique blend of hip-hop and R&B. He has received nominations at the Korean Hip-hop Awards and Korean Music Awards and was part of the lineup for the Grand Mint Festival 2020 in Seoul.

“The Electric AI Canvas”, an immersive art experience that combines art and technology, will be presented by BMW at the BMW Lounge during Frieze Seoul 2023. This installation, inspired by the new BMW i5, transforms the electric car into a dynamic canvas featuring generative art by contemporary artists Esther Mahlangu, Kohei Nawa, Eric N. Mack, Koo Jiyoon, Bin Woo Hyuk, and Jung Soo Jung. The AI-generated animations projected onto the BMW i5 are created using AI models trained on a curated dataset of works from renowned contemporary artists.

An exclusive Art Talk will take place on September 7 at the BMW Lounge, featuring curator Gary Yeh and contemporary artists Jung Soo Jung and Koo Jiyoon. The artists, with their diverse global perspectives and exploration of materials and culture, represent the forefront of contemporary art. The evolving animations created by AI aim to take visitors on a journey through their worlds and reflect the fabric of society.

Nathan Shipley, a creative technologist from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, and Gary Yeh from ArtDrunk collaborated on this project. They trained Nvidia’s AI architecture StyleGAN on various artistic styles and works by participating contemporary artists to generate abstract evolving animations. The experiment explores the intersection of art and AI and opens up new possibilities for art-making.

The human-machine art installation, “The Electric AI Canvas”, is a testament to BMW’s commitment to human-centered technology, sustainability, and the potential of AI as a creative tool. Visitors can experience it at the BMW Lounge during Frieze Seoul 2023.

For those interested in visiting the BMW Lounge, entrance tickets are required. The installation will be open from September 6 to 9, 2023, at COEX in Gangnam.

Next-Gen BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Spotted for the First Time

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is a compact sport sedan with an additional pair of doors, is getting a new generation. Recent spy shots show that development is underway, with production expected to start in late 2024.

One of the notable features at the front end is the unusual layout of BMW’s kidney grilles. Unlike the traditional design, this model has a smaller version of the grilles in the center of the nose, with two larger openings on each side. However, it’s worth noting that the white mesh used in the larger sections is likely not the final production-spec part.
