Elon Musk Provides Updates on Cybertruck Production and Demand

The Cybertruck, Tesla’s highly anticipated electric truck, has garnered nearly 1.9 million reservations, according to data from a crowd-sourced tracker. However, with Tesla currently planning to produce 375,000 Cybertrucks per year, it could take over five years for the most recent batch of reservations to be fulfilled. Nevertheless, Tesla aims to increase production figures in the coming quarters to meet the high demand. During a recent investor call, Elon Musk expressed his excitement over the overwhelming demand, stating that it is beyond expectations. Analysts even project that Tesla will surpass 10 million deliveries by 2030 and triple its stock price by then.

In the meantime, for those who have not reserved a Cybertruck yet, booking one might seem uncertain. The unique design and promised high performance and advanced technology of the electric truck have received mixed reviews. Originally, Tesla had set a base price of $39,900 for the rear-wheel-drive model with a range of around 250 miles, with the price increasing to $69,900 for the all-wheel-drive trim that offers over 500 miles on a single charge. However, Tesla has removed all information about trims and pricing from its official website. Musk has hinted that the final price will be higher due to the challenges of the new manufacturing method associated with the Cybertruck. Some analysts estimate the sticker price to be close to $50,000.

These Early Cybertruck Concepts Prove Just How Radical The Final Design Is

Since its unveiling in late 2019, the Cybertruck has captivated people’s attention with its bold and futuristic design, breaking away from the traditional look of pickup trucks. In a recent reveal, it’s been disclosed that Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, always intended for the company’s pickup truck to have a distinct appearance. Musk pushed his designers to create a design that was not only futuristic but also edgier and somewhat unconventional. The decision to use stainless steel as the truck’s material was also a crucial aspect in achieving the unique look of the Cybertruck.

Musk’s rationale behind these design choices was relatively straightforward. He believed that current pickup truck designs had remained stagnant for many years, resulting in a monotonous and unexciting aesthetic. Understandably, most of Tesla’s design team did not initially share Musk’s enthusiasm for the radical design and material choices. However, he overruled all objections and declared that Tesla was determined to move forward with the design, regardless of any opposition.

Once the Cybertruck is launched, it will be intriguing to observe how it fares in the market. With over 1 million reservations already placed for the truck, it’s evident that there is a significant demand for it. Nevertheless, considering that the Cybertruck deviates from the typical characteristics of existing vehicles, it remains uncertain whether it will achieve success in the long run.

Tesla Cybertruck finally enters production

Tesla has finally started production of its Cybertruck at its Gigafactory in Texas. This comes almost four years after the electric vehicle (EV) was first unveiled. The first production Cybertruck was revealed on Tesla’s social media channels, showcasing factory workers at the Texan headquarters. It is expected that Tesla will meet its revised target of delivering the pick-up to customers by the end of September, although this is a two-year delay from the original 2021 launch date.

The Cybertruck is a rival to Ford’s F-150 Lightning and is the same length as traditional competitors. However, it features a unique and distinctive design both inside and out. The EV has a radical wedge-shape design, no front grille, angular window frames, and bodywork with minimal curvature. The body of the Cybertruck is made of ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel and is claimed to be bulletproof against 9mm bullets.

Customers will have three powertrain options to choose from, with one, two, or three electric motors. The single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version has a 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and an estimated range of 250 miles. It can tow up to 3400kg and has a payload of 1360kg. The starting price for this variant is expected to be $39,900 (around £30,600) before any government incentives, according to Tesla’s launch details. All variants of the Cybertruck are said to be capable of charging at 1MW (1000kW), similar to the Tesla Semi.

The mid-range dual-motor variant offers all-wheel drive, a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds, and the ability to tow more than 4500kg. The starting price for this version is anticipated to be $49,900 (£38,300) before incentives. The top-of-the-line Cybertruck will feature Tesla’s latest tri-motor Plaid EV powertrain, which is also used in the Tesla Model S Plaid. Priced from $69,900 (£53,700), it boasts a claimed range of 500 miles, a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds, and the ability to complete a quarter-mile in just over 10 seconds. Additionally, it has a towing capacity of 6350kg, as confirmed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
