Florida Could Name Its Most Famous Highway After Jimmy Buffett

Come Monday, Florida’s historic State Road A1A might have a brand new title: Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway. Two payments handed within the Florida Legislature over the weekend had been unanimously authorized by the state Senate honoring the music legend, who handed away final 12 months on the age of 76.

The first of the 2 payments would rename parts of the 340-mile stretch of freeway, which runs south from Jimmy’s former residence in Key West north to Fernandina Beach close to Jacksonville. Parts of A1A in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties would bear the title Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway, which, paradoxically, was the title of his fifth studio album.

The second invoice authorized a brand new Buffett-inspired Florida license plate design with the phrase “Margaritaville,” named after his hottest tune and his chain of eating places, shops, and accommodations. All proceeds from the license plates would go towards a charity based by Jimmy known as Singing for Change, which helps victims of hurricanes.

“Margaritaville is just what Florida is all about,” Republican state Senator Gayle Harrell advised the Associated Press. “No one represents the open sun, beaches, and music more than Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville.”

Republican Chuck Clemons initially filed the invoice in October of 2023 following Jimmy’s dying, and now it appears prefer it might come to fruition if the payments are authorized within the Florida House of Representatives. Residents are even pushing to rename the Key West International Airport after Buffett – which can quickly be situated off of Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.
