Study Shows Electric Cars Are Less Reliable Than Gas-Powered Vehicles, According to Consumer Reports

According to Consumer Reports‘ 2024 reliability owner satisfaction survey results published on Wednesday, electric vehicles are significantly less reliable than vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.

Based on data from owners of over 330,000 vehicles spanning model years 2000 to 2024, Consumer Reports found that on average, EVs are 79 percent less reliable than ICE-powered vehicles, despite having fewer moving parts and simpler drivetrain designs. Additionally, plug-in hybrids exhibit even worse reliability, with 146 percent more problems compared to traditional gas-powered cars. It’s worth noting that traditional hybrid vehicles fared the best, reporting 26 percent fewer problems than ICE-powered vehicles.

Consumer Reports suggests that new technologies associated with electric vehicles may result in early adopters experiencing some issues before reliability improves over time.

CR Senior Director of Auto Testing Jake Fisher shared with Automotive News, “The longer a vehicle or a technology is in production, the more the bugs are worked out. The automakers that have produced EVs earlier are improving the reliability.”
