The South Korean manufacturer, Kia, has unveiled the all-new Kia EV5 compact electric SUV at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. More details about the brand’s second zero-emissions SUV will be shared at the EV Day event in October. For now, we have access to an official photo gallery and some design information from the press release.

The new EV5 comes with a mood lighting system that offers adjustable brightness and a choice of 64 colors, including 10 curated by Kia’s lighting experts. The mood lighting synchronizes with the vehicle’s driving modes, adjusts in low light conditions, and can even alert the driver if the car exceeds the speed limit.

Kia also emphasizes the interior customization options, allowing customers to choose from four color and five seat pattern options, including woven variants and an artificial leather version for the base model. On the exterior, the EV5 will be available in nine glossy colors and a matte Ivory Silver.

Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center, explains that the EV5 was designed to redefine the compact SUV genre with Kia’s unique design philosophy, “Opposites United.” He further adds that the EV5 sets a new standard for design, performance, and practicality, while offering an enhanced driving experience and user interface.

The Kia EV5 is designed to cater to the needs of millennial families, offering seating for five, exceptional versatility, and outstanding comfort. The front of the SUV features a wide nose, solid hood, and Kia’s three-dimensional “Signature Star Map Lighting” created by LED daytime running lights. Specific dimensions and technical specifications have not yet been released, but according to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the EV5 is estimated to be 181.7 inches long, 73.8 inches wide, and 67.5 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 108.2 inches. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y measures 187 inches in length, 75.6 inches in width, and 63.9 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 113.8 inches. The EV5 will be powered by an 82-kilowatt-hour battery, offering an estimated driving range of up to 372 miles. The Kia EV5 will first launch in China and subsequently in other markets towards the end of the year.
