JEREMY MCGRATH AND THE SUPERCROSS-ONLY CONTRACT–CLASSIC DECOSTER

In 1999, Jeremy McGrath already had extra Supercross wins than anybody else, and he wasn’t even near being carried out–in Supercross. His outside profession was drawing to a detailed. This prompted Roger DeCoster to invest on the ramifications of the Supercross specialists of the long run. Here’s what he mentioned within the August, 1999 situation of Dirt Bike.

Jeremy McGrath simply isn’t regular. If  he retains going at this fee, he could have extra profession supercross wins than the subsequent ten guys put collectively. It’s unimaginable to provide you with a report he hasn’t damaged on the earth of Supercross. Having a recognizable famous person in our sport is nice. But this can be a little ridiculous. Riders are negotiating their contracts based mostly on how shut behind McGrath they keep. And if he’s getting any slower with age, frankly, I can’t inform. Of course, if somebody needs to be this dominant, I’m glad it’s Jeremy. He has work ethic, he’s good with followers, he has some stage of non-public integrity. On high of that, Jeremy is likely to be one of many causes that we’re doing so effectively. There are extra spectators watching MX than ever earlier than, and bike gross sales are up at each stage. Face it, there are quite a lot of children on the market who need to be identical to Jeremy.

Having mentioned all that, I have to level out that he has put our sport on a really harmful course. I’m referring to his supercross-only contract. He rode the primary outside nationwide at Glen Helen just because it’s near house. After that, his season is formally over. In order to earn his pay, he doesn’t must swing a leg over a bike till the 12 months 2000. Sure, McGrath is in a singular bargaining place. He’s the highest man, so his backers must associate with something he says. But use your creativeness for a second and take into consideration the precedent he has set.

  • In the brief run, promoters will need to have extra Supercrosses. If you need to have the highest rider, you’ll be able to’t do it by holding a National.
  • Fans who need to see the highest rider within the nation can’t do it by shopping for a ticket for a nationwide. They have to attend for subsequent 12 months’s Supercross.
  • Even the opposite riders will endure from not having McGrath round. They can be taught rather a lot from watching him on the observe and within the pits. Remember; he nonetheless needs to be thought of the very best American outside rider as effectively.
  • In the long term, it begins a ball rolling that may proceed lengthy after Jeremy is gone.
  • If extra riders are profitable on this  sort of specialization, then finally  there may very well be two utterly completely different: units of riders, virtually like highway racers and motocrossers.
  • Factory groups will then must divide their sources between a Supercross group and a nationwide group.
  • Eventually, there could be date conflicts between Supercrosses and nationals. If they use two completely different units of riders, then why not?
  • Nationals will inevitably lose status. They have already got, to some extent. Outdoor racing might finally maintain the place that four-stroke racing or Arenacross at present holds. That will imply fewer MX tracks for all of us to journey, 12 months spherical.
  • The stage of driving capability will in all probability drop, even in supercross. Without the outside races to maintain them in form, riders will develop into much less match. We in all probability gained’t discover it till European riders begin beating us increasingly usually. Supercross is extra of a psychological train, requiring eager steadiness, timing and nerve. Fitness is a key ingredient, however not practically to the extent of out of doors racing.

A Supercross-only profession definitely sounds interesting. You don’t must work all 12 months lengthy. You don’t have to coach as onerous. You don’t have to remain in crummy motels in the midst of nowhere. You don’t must stand up early and stand in some dusty, sizzling discipline from 7:00 a.m. till darkish. You get to remain close to the stadium in a pleasant resort. Right now, the Supercross-only rider may very well be carried out along with his season in 4 months, then play for half a 12 months. He can in all probability get critical about coaching within the final two months earlier than the season picks up once more. And think about this: Right now everyone seems to be watching us. There are some crucial individuals within the discipline of automobile racing who’re impressed with our sport. I lately had an opportunity to fulfill with a few of them, and I used to be shocked on the respect that they had for us. They see us as powerful guys in a troublesome sport the place the quickest man normally wins. Motocross and even Supercross aren’t simply “shows” the place the outcomes are dictated by politics and cash. That alone needs to be sufficient purpose to ensure we don’t lose our greatest property.

I’m not saying that Jeremy McGrath doesn’t deserve particular therapy. He does. How can we disregard the desires of somebody who has gained extra races than anybody else and been so good with the followers and to our sport? I’d don’t have any drawback if the AMA made a rule that as a way to have the identical alternative, a rider wants to attain at the very least 60 or 70 wins. That ought to slim the sphere of would-be supercross-only riders!

Frankly, proper now we are able to’t afford to deal with anybody else this fashion. Even although the game of Supercross is raking in extra money than ever earlier than, 90 % of the price of racing is being fronted by the 4 Japanese producers. They can’t afford to double their group dimension. Yes, the riders and the groups do want extra day without work (one week between the top of the supercross sequence and the beginning of the outside isn’t fairly sufficient). But taking half the 12 months off and neglecting the nationals isn’t the reply.

If there are going to be modifications, I’d wish to see a return of the Grand National Number One. Remember that? It mixed supercross and outside factors, and David Bailey carried the plate the final time it was used (1983). Riders may not be so desperate to journey Supercross provided that it meant letting another person carry a number-one plate, one that may be much more prestigious than the Supercross one. So how frightened am I? After saying all this, how possible do I feel it’s that the Supercross-only contract would be the wave of the long run? Do I feel that we’re heading inevitably towards all of the dangerous issues I’ve listed above?

No. I don’t see something like this coming for a very long time. In all honesty, I gained’t begin worrying till there’s one other McGrath. And that is likely to be some time.

HAAKER BACK ON TOP AT OREGON ENDURCROSS

Colton Haaker: “That should have been three moto wins, but in the second moto, I just had an error there where I followed a lapper when I shouldn’t have, but I still got the overall, and that’s the important thing—my first overall of the season. I think I led every lap except the last lap in the second moto, tonight.”

Colton Haaker of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna secured the overall win at round five of the IRC Tire EnduroCross Series in Redmond, Oregon, with a 1-3-1 finish. His performance allowed him and FMF/KTM’s Trystan Hart to narrow the series points lead of factory Beta rider Jonny Walker heading into the final round in Reno, Nevada.

Haaker dominated early in all three motos but encountered an obstacle in the second moto when he got tangled with a lapped rider, allowing Hart to take the win. However, Haaker’s determined riding in the final moto secured the overall victory for him.

Trystan Hart: “It’s coming down to the wire again like last year. There are seven points between us, but I’m going to need Haaker’s help, and he’s riding well, so it’s doable. It was super-tight racing between me and Colton with a winner-take-all in the final race. I didn’t get the jump in moto three, and that was important on this track, as it was hard to pass. We made up a lot of points today in the championship – now we’ll look ahead to Reno!”

Trystan Hart took second overall for the night with a 2-1-3 finish, expressing disappointment at not securing the overall win but pleased with narrowing the championship gap to just seven points behind Jonny Walker. The stage is set for an intense final round in Reno, Nevada, to determine the championship.

Jonny Walker: “I just felt tense in the first moto. I just got into the race and just wasn’t getting the triple I wanted to get and just losing bits of time here and there. I felt I had the pace in the second moto and Colton went down on the last lap, so I got second behind Trystan. It was tight racing and I had a chance for the overall going into the last moto, but I ended up going down when Colton cross-jumped me, dropping me to second.”

Jonny Walker, who set the fastest Hot Lap time earlier in the evening, finished third with a 3-2-2 moto tally, maintaining a seven-point lead in the championship despite feeling disconnected from the track. He acknowledged the challenge and the tight competition in the series.

“Not a good night,” said Webb. “To be fair, I think it just came down to a mental thing. I looked at the track yesterday and thought, ‘I really don’t like the track.’ And it showed. I just rode tight. I would try to charge, and then I’d get arm-pump. Just not a good night.”

FactoryONE Sherco’s Cody Webb struggled with the track and suffered from a mental block, resulting in a fourth-place finish for the night with 5-4-4 moto finishes. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Ryder LeBlond secured fifth overall with 4-5-6 moto finishes.

RPM Racing/KTM’s Will Riordan finished sixth with 7-6-5, edging out FactoryOne Sherco’s Cooper Abbott who finished seventh with 6-8-8. Arizona GasGas rider Max Gerston took eighth place with 10-7-7, while Factory Rieju rider Dominik Olszowsky secured ninth with 8-10-9. Idaho’s Anthony Johnson (KTM) rounded up the top 10 with 9-9-11 finishes.

Hallie Marks: “It feels amazing. This is the first race that I’ve led almost the entire race. I almost had a heart attack when Kylee passed me but I was able to get back in the lead.”

In the EX Women’s Pro division, Montana’s Hallie Marks emerged victorious in the main event after a battle with runner-up Kylee Sweeten (GG) of Oregon. Sweeten briefly took the lead, but Marks retaliated and secured the win. Mellisa Harten (Bet) finished third.

The IRC Tire EnduroCross Series presented by Progressive series concludes in Reno, Nevada, on November 18th, for its sixth and final round at Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center. For more information, visit www.endurocross.com.

The 2024 Toyota Tundra wins top honor at the 2023 Texas Truck Rodeo

PLANO, Texas (Nov. 10, 2023) – The 2024 Toyota Tundra has been named the “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) at the annual Texas Truck Rodeo event. This is the second time in three years that the Tundra has received this prestigious title at the event.

Not only did the Tundra receive recognition, but the all-new 2024 Grand Highlander also secured first place in the Full-Size SUV category. Additionally, the Toyota Audio Multimedia was honored with a Feature Award, and the Toyota i-Force MAX Turbocharged Hybrid was awarded the Best Powertrain Award.

Built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX), the Tundra features a fully boxed chassis and a multilink rear suspension. It boasts a maximum tow rating of 12,000 pounds and a max payload of 1,940 pounds. With two new i-Force powertrains – the i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 engine and available i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid – the Tundra not only enhances performance but also improves efficiency. The hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain is particularly impressive, producing 437 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 583 lb.-ft. of torque at an impressively low 2,400 rpm.

Joe Moses, VP – Vehicle Marketing and Comms, expressed, “The Tundra is not only an American story, but a Texan story: assembled at our manufacturing plant in San Antonio. We are thrilled to see the positive impact the Tundra continues to have on the truck segment and are honored that TAWA recognized the Toyota Tundra as the Truck of Texas for a second time.”

The 2024 Tundra offers a range of features to cater to various needs. It includes off-road technology such as available Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control (CRAWL), and selectable rear locker for those looking to venture off the beaten path. The new multimedia system provides a user-friendly experience with voice-activated technology and a massive 14-inch touchscreen.

Interior features include a panoramic moonroof, a tailored cabin, a fan-favorite power vertical rear window, and an available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel for the driver.

During this year’s Texas Truck Rodeo, 37 journalists evaluated the latest trucks and SUVs from various manufacturers on an off-road course at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas. Vehicles were assessed on interior, exterior, value, performance, and personal appeal. The Tundra excelled on the rugged course, outperforming its competitors. TAWA President Teia Collier commented, “The Texas Auto Writers Association Truck of Texas award is a prestigious honor, and the 2024 Toyota Tundra has truly earned the title.”

TAWA, a Texas-based nonprofit association for automotive journalists, has been promoting professionalism and quality in journalism for over two decades. It has become one of the most influential and recognized automotive journalist associations in the U.S. with its two annual events – Texas Auto Roundup and Texas Truck Rodeo – bringing members together to experience vehicles from various manufacturers in one place, at one time.

Records broken as Ash Sutton secures his fourth BTCC title

Ash Sutton has become a record-equalling four-time British Touring Car Champion, clinching the title with two wins at the renowned Brands Hatch GP circuit last weekend.

The 29-year-old achieved an impressive feat of six pole positions and 12 race wins during the season, making him the first driver to claim the championship in both rear-wheel and front-wheel-drive vehicles.

Previously, the only driver to achieve six pole positions in a season was James Thompson in 2003, and the sole racer to secure 12 race wins was Alain Menu back in 1997. Sutton’s four titles now put him on par with Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington.

Sutton faced strong competition from the runner-up and outgoing champion, Tom Ingram, who finished second in the first two races. Ingram pursued Sutton throughout the season, but Sutton held onto his lead to secure the championship.

“It feels incredible, I’m lost for words,” said Sutton. “The car has been absolutely fantastic, and I’m immensely grateful to NAPA Racing UK and everyone involved. Becoming a four-time BTCC champion is an amazing achievement!”

Sutton further expressed his relief, acknowledging the pressure of maintaining his lead throughout the season. “Even though we had a significant points gap, Tom [Ingram] was right. It was ours to lose. A single bad race could have changed everything… People talk about breaking records, which is great. We always strive to push further. But what’s truly special is being the first driver to claim the title in both front-wheel and rear-wheel-drive vehicles. That’s what we were ultimately aiming for because I don’t plan to stop at four titles.”

The 2023 season concluded on a high note for BMW as Jake Hill won the final race for Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport. However, BMW fell just short of securing their eighth consecutive manufacturers’ title. The NAPA Racing UK/Ford team claimed both the Manufacturers’ and Teams’ titles, while Josh Cook and his One Motorsport with Starline Racing squad took home the Independent Drivers’ and Teams’ accolades.

The Jack Sears Trophy, which saw a close competition throughout the year, was won by CarStore Power Maxed Racing’s rookie driver, Andrew Watson.

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship will return in April, with the opening rounds of the 2024 season taking place at Donington Park.

Sutton seals the deal with race one success

NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton secured a lights-to-flag victory in the opening race, solidifying his lead in the championship battle.

It was a fitting win for Sutton, who was undoubtedly the star of the 2023 BTCC season. He was closely followed by his main rival for the championship, Tom Ingram of Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8.

Ingram kept the pressure on Sutton throughout the race and made a final attempt to snatch victory after a late safety car period. However, Sutton held his ground and crossed the finish line ahead of Ingram, sparking wild celebrations in the NAPA Racing UK garage.

Vauxhall has been honored with The Sun’s ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ award at the News UK Motor Awards 2023. Additionally, Vauxhall’s Corsa supermini has been recognized as the ‘Small Car of the Year’.

The annual News UK Motor Awards celebrate the best new vehicles of the past year, as voted by The Sun.

Vauxhall’s achievement in being named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ is a result of its successful year, marked by significant steps taken towards becoming an electric-only brand by 2028. As of 2024, Vauxhall will offer an electric version of every car in its lineup and currently offers an electric version for every van in its light commercial vehicle range.

At the beginning of the year, Vauxhall launched the Grand Sport Electric (GSe), the first electrified performance sub-brand in the market, which introduced new performance versions to the Vauxhall lineup. Additionally, 2023 witnessed the launch of the Astra Electric and the New Corsa, the best-selling supermini in the UK and the third best-selling car overall in the country so far this year. Last month, Vauxhall unveiled its new Experimental Concept, providing a glimpse into the brand’s future.

Vauxhall has been the leading electric van manufacturer in the UK for the past two years and continues to dominate the sales charts in 2023. More than a quarter of all electric vans sold in the UK this year have been Vauxhall Vivaro Electrics, making it the best-selling electric light commercial vehicle (e-LCV) in the country. Vauxhall is one of the few brands that offers a fully electric variant across its entire LCV range.

The Sun Motors Editor, Rob Gill, praised Vauxhall for its long-standing presence in Britain and applauded the brand for producing electric versions of popular models such as the Corsa and Astra. Gill referred to it as a smart move that ensures Vauxhall’s continued success.

The New Corsa, recipient of the ‘Best Small Car’ award, features Vauxhall’s bold and distinctive Vizor front end across the range, along with various styling and technology improvements. The fully electric models of the Corsa are equipped with Vauxhall’s next-generation battery, providing a range of 246 miles (WLTP). The Corsa has previously been named The Sun’s ‘Car of the Year’ in 2020 and their ‘Value Car of the Year’ in 2021.

James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, expressed his delight in Vauxhall being named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ and highlighted the brand’s progress as a leading automotive manufacturer in the UK. He also emphasized the success of the Corsa as a testament to Vauxhall’s latest range of cars and vans.

Earlier this year, Vauxhall launched the groundbreaking ‘Electric Streets of Britain’ campaign. The campaign aims to address the lack of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in residential areas by partnering with three leading charging operators to help councils understand the challenges and available solutions. More information about this campaign can be found at www.electricstreets.co.uk

The second BMW M4 GT3 will be driven by Maxime Martin, Charles Weerts, and Augusto Farfus, all of whom have strong positions in the Drivers’ Championship. BMW leads the manufacturer standings with 100 points, thanks to BMW M Team WRT’s one-two finish at Kyalami and ROWE Racing’s victory at the 24h Spa.

The Indianapolis 8 Hour race will start at 12:15 local time (18:15 CEST) on October 7th. BMW M Motorsport has achieved great success at this event in recent years. In 2020, Walkenhorst Motorsport secured a one-two finish with the BMW M6 GT3, leading Farfus and Nick Catsburg to the championship title. Last year, Turner Motorsport claimed third place and a podium finish with the BMW M4 GT3. BimmerWorld won the Pro-Am class, while Samantha Tan Racing triumphed in the Silver class.

The 8-hour race is a highlight for North American BMW M Motorsport teams this season. BimmerWorld and ST Racing will each enter one BMW M4 GT3. BimmerWorld will compete in the Pro category of the Fanatec GT World Challenge America with drivers Bill Auberlen, Chandler Hull, and Robby Foley. ST Racing, with drivers Samantha Tan and BMW M works driver Neil Verhagen, will participate in the Pro-Am class. The third driver for ST Racing will be announced later.

Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, said: “The Intercontinental GT Challenge has been very successful for us this season. We lead the manufacturer standings after our victories at Kyalami and Spa-Francorchamps, and our drivers are performing well. We aim to continue this success at the Indianapolis 8 Hour and build on the achievements of BMW M Motorsport teams in recent years. I am also thrilled to see strong representation from our North American teams at their home event. I will be rooting for all of them!”
