ROLAND HINZ & ME

The year was 1980 when I started working at Dirt Bike Magazine. Two weeks prior, the ownership (Bill Golden) had hired an executive to run the day to day operations and play a role in the planning and execution of the two magazines we had, Motocross Action and Dirt Bike. Roland Hinz had come from a successful job working at entertainment mags (Rona Barrett’s Gossip and Hollywood) turning them into big money makers. He was a magazine guru, a newsstand specialist and he had a passion for dirt bikes.

Roland had come into an environment where huge egos worked diligently to protect their fiefdoms and were violently opposed to most of the ideas he brought to the table. Editorial meetings forecasting our plans for the month, cover subject meetings and cover line control and working within a budget led his vision. The reigning staff boiled.

What we didn’t know was that Roland was there to rescue a sinking ship that was hemorrhaging money. His goal was to pay off the debt, then purchase the company. What I remember was that things in the office got tense. I was a full-blown dirt bike enthusiast and was just excited to be working for the magazine. There was talk of anarchy, continuous criticism and zero respect for the future owner of Hi Torque Publications. I was afraid that I’d lose my job right after getting the best job on the planet.

Roland was tough but had enough patience to kickstart the change in the company. By the time he paid off the debt and became the owner, the Editors embraced his plan and amazingly, we flourished. I remember color meetings (where we chose the photos for the magazine and the main cover image) that lasted for hours. He was always enthusiastic about cover lines, knowing that they had the ability to attract attention at the newsstand if they had a good hook. Forty years later, Roland played a role in every cover line that appeared on his magazines.

He was good at allowing the editors with a passion for the sport to drive the content. We just had to convince him how this was good for the reader, beneficial for the advertiser, and aligned with the interests of the newsstand buyer. I remember when Paul [Clipper] tested a Honda ATC in Dirt Bike. It was a highly debated move, disliked by the purists in the office. Roland saw it as an emerging sport and started Dirt Wheels magazine. For decades, it was his most successful magazine.

In 1981, while at a Husqvarna product intro at DeAnza Cycle Park, all the press members got a chance to test ride every new model in their line. Roland was on a trail ride with Mark Blackwell, I was out riding in the canyons with Dick Burleson. Our two groups met head-on in a tight canyon with near misses among the riders. I collided directly with one of the riders. It was Roland. I thought that it was the end of my job. My boss was more scared than mad, and we never talked about the incident again.

There were some unique aspects to the man. He was incredibly successful yet drove a Volkswagen Thing to work every day for years. In the decades that I worked for him, he always wore shorts and tennis shoes. And when it came to religion, Roland was a devout Christian. Every year at our Christmas party, he would start it with a prayer, allowing non-believers to leave if they were offended. After my wife passed away following a long battle with cancer, Roland sat with me in my office every day, talking about life, death, and God, always ending with “are you good?”

When I started working for Roland, I was young and afraid of the stern German. We would clash over covers, argue about budgets for testing and travel, and in over four decades, nothing changed. Except that we became friends. He was a mentor, and in a changing world where magazines were seen as a dying industry, we remained profitable.

Roland passed away this weekend after a long battle with his health. I will truly miss this man. He was a teacher, a tough and strict boss, and had the gift of taking care of the people who made great things happen which was undoubtedly a catalyst for Hi Torque’s success. Rest in peace, my friend.

The Real Story Behind Doug DeMuro’s Mercedes A-Class

Doug DeMuro is an interesting presenter in the automotive YouTube scene. His unique format and style of reviewing cars have made him the go-to guy for complete information on quirks and features available in any vehicle. But beyond this, Doug has a unique taste in cars especially ones of the obscure and ugly variety. The more quirky the car is the more Doug wants to review and most likely wants to own it.

He made headlines recently with the investment in his online auction website Cars and Bids with a $37 million investment. Soon after, he bought his all-time dream car which is a Porsche Carrera GT. Even before the investment Doug was making enough and could buy this car but just couldn’t justify pulling the trigger until now. Six months after owning the Carrera GT he has just bought another car, you would think with all this money he would get a cool car. Well, he did, but it is a car that would only appeal to the quirky side of Doug DeMuro.

Why Did Doug Demuro Buy An Old Mercedes A-Class?

When you hear that Doug bought an old Mercedes-Benz, you would think he’d buy a significant vehicle similar to the Carrera GT. A Mercedes McLaren SLR perhaps or one of the black series models but no. Instead, he bought a European-spec first-gen 1997 Mercedes-Benz A140 that almost nobody in America knows about or cares about. It was sold mainly in Europe and was seen as a departure from what Mercedes was known for. It was a cheap alternative to other expensive and luxurious Mercedes models and people bought them and used them as cheap cars.

But Doug has always liked quirky, obscure, and ugly cars like the Nissan S cargo, Renault Avantime, Isuzu Vehicross, and many more. So the A-class is a cheap, quirky, and unloved vehicle that was never sold in the US and ticks all the right boxes for Doug DeMuro. So in his quest to find a car that satisfies his quirky desires, he found this one and instantly pulled the trigger.

The Mercedes A-Class Was Not Doug DeMuro’s First Choice

Audi
Front three quarter profile of the Audi A2

As stupid as this car may seem to most people today, this was not Doug’s first choice. There were two other cars he wanted more than this car which makes the A140 seem like a sensible choice. The first choice was the Audi A2 which was Audi’s version of a small city hatchback similar to the Mercedes A-class. But while the Mercedes A-class sold well, the Audi A2 didn’t do so well. It was only on sale for 5 years from 2000-2005 meanwhile, the A-class is still in production today.

Doug’s second choice was an even worse and uglier car, it was the Fiat Multipla. It is the ugliest car among Doug’s choices but was more desirable than the A-class. The reason these cars weren’t picked was because they were not legal to import just yet. The A-class was the only one that just became legal for importation and made sense for Doug at the moment. I believe as soon as the others become legal to import, Doug will go hunting for them once more.

What Is Special About The Original Mercedes A-Class?

Doug Demuro
Selfie shot of Doug Demuro and his 1997 Mercedes A140

Simply put, there was nothing special about the Mercedes A-Class. It was a small, cheap, and slow city car with no special features. It was treated just like any other normal vehicle with no significance or importance to the automotive industry. Unlike JDM cars which are desirable and will soon be legal for importation, the A-class was never desirable. Mercedes has even announced that the current A-class which was available since 2019 will be leaving the U.S. market after 2022 but will be available in other markets.

But the special thing about Doug’s car is that it is probably the nicest example of an A-class which is a hard thing to find since no one cared for these cars. Also, these cars were not sold here and this might be the only one in the United States. The main novelty of owning this car for Doug is that it is so rare in the U.S. that you may never see another one. For context, you have better chances of seeing a Bugatti before you spot another one of these.

It is a one-owner car with 60,000 miles, being the A140, Doug’s car is the base model, there is an A160, A190, and later A210 and AMG models. But finding the base car in nice condition was hard enough and higher trims may be impossible. This car was very nice and checked all the boxes for Doug Demuro. It even has air conditioning which is almost impossible to find in these cars since most owners did not tick that option.

A Financial Loss For Doug Demuro And Mercedes-Benz

  • Despite being a sales success Mercedes reportedly lost $1,500 on each A-class sold.

When this car went on sale in 1997, it received a lot of criticism for being ugly and having the wrong proportions. But despite people’s complaints, it sold very well with this first gen A-class selling over a million units in its seven-year production run. For most automakers, this would mean a sales success which it was, but it was also a revenue loss for the company. Mercedes lost money selling the A-Class, this was due to the controversy surrounding its safety.

A German automotive journalist Robert Collin performed the Elk/moose test to determine the probability of a rollover. The A-class failed the test and Mercedes originally brushed it off, but news spread quickly. Mercedes had to recall all 2600 units which had been sold and suspended sales for three months. The recalled, and subsequent cars were fitted with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and revised suspension.

Doug DeMuro
Side profile of Doug Demuro’s 1997 Mercedes A140

As for Doug DeMuro, this car was a financial loss for him as well. Most of his older cars like the Audi RS2, Mercedes G500 cabriolet, and Ford GT are enthusiast cars that have appreciated over the years. They were emotional purchases, but there was a reason behind spending huge amounts of money on these cars. He knew he wouldn’t lose money owning and driving them and so far it has worked in his favor.

While his A140 is an equally emotional purchase, but it has none of the enthusiast excitement or value proposition. Doug bought this car which was a nice example for $2,200 and said it cost more to prepare, import and register the vehicle. This is money spent that will not be recovered anytime soon unless they suddenly become collectibles.

10 Electric Crossovers That Are Perfect For The Environment

Electric crossovers are powered by batteries that emit zero harmful emissions or pollutants. These battery packs are specifically designed to allow for a spacious and comfortable cabin and excellent cargo space for families, making these crossovers perfect for daily commutes, as well as long drives, and weekend adventures. In addition, they have numerous benefits for the environment like significantly reducing carbon emissions and other pollutants that can harm the environment due to their zero-emission capabilities, making them very eco-friendly.

The recent massive shift towards electric vehicles has made several automakers launch electric crossovers to combat the growing demand. These electric crossovers also contribute significantly towards reducing noise pollution in addition to reducing emissions. The electric motors that power them are virtually silent, thereby significantly reducing noise levels in the vicinity. When you factor in the cost of ownership, you realize that although the initial cost of purchasing an electric crossover may be higher than a conventional vehicle, the long-term cost savings make it a more affordable option. Electric crossovers eliminate drivers’ worries about fuel costs. They are more efficient because they consume less energy. The absence of regular mechanical rotating parts that need routine maintenance means they have lower maintenance costs than traditional cars.

What’s The Difference Between Polestar And Volvo?

The Polestar brand is a recent addition to the global automotive market. In October 2017, it became its own brand separate from Volvo, where it was originally a division for high-performance cars. This move was announced by Volvo Cars and Geely and marked the brand’s dedication to producing electric vehicles (EVs), coinciding with the 20th anniversary of its foundation by Flash / Polestar Racing.

A Unique Philosophy

The initial aim behind the creation of Polestar as a standalone brand was to compete in the emerging market of electrified cars. Their first model, the Polestar 1, was a large plug-in hybrid luxury coupe, followed by the Polestar 2, an all-electric midsize sedan that directly rivals the Tesla Model 3. Despite being a new brand, Polestar managed to sell around 110,000 vehicles worldwide between 2020 and May 2023, demonstrating their success in the premium segment.

A Better Volvo?

The confusion between Polestar and Volvo’s positioning began when Volvo introduced its first fully electric autonomous model, the Volvo C40. This highlighted Volvo’s plans to produce premium electric vehicles, raising questions about how the two brands will differentiate themselves while pursuing a similar goal.

Subsequently, Polestar unveiled the Polestar 3 around the same time as Volvo revealed the new XC90. Both vehicles are large premium electric SUVs, but their construction philosophies differ. Polestar’s existence is based on three fundamental pillars: design, innovation, and sustainability. They aim to produce a climate-neutral car by 2030, which aligns with Volvo’s values and objectives. However, the specifics of their differences are yet to be seen.

Volvo Will Also Become Fully Electric

As automakers transition from combustion to electric power, they are creating new brands or sub-brands to better position themselves in the new era. For example, BMW has the “i” sub-brand, and Mercedes has the “EQ” family. However, as the shift towards electric vehicles becomes predominant, manufacturers must avoid redundancy between these brands. Geely and Volvo Cars aim to position Polestar as a real alternative without negatively impacting Volvo’s sales.

Ultimately, the success and differentiation of Polestar will depend on the public’s response to their upcoming models. For now, both Polestar and Volvo can coexist, but only time will tell how they will continue to evolve.

Witness Cars Plummeting Off a Cliff to Commemorate America’s Independence Day

While some people prefer to celebrate by having quiet dinners or small parties, others opt for lighting fireworks. In the United States, July 4th is a day known for grand fireworks displays, observed in almost every town across the country. However, in one particular place in Alaska, the usual pyrotechnics are not enough. Welcome to the Glacier View car launch. Wait, what?

Yes, you read it right – a car launch. As depicted in the video above, these cars aren’t simply launched off a ramp. Located near the Matanuska River, approximately 100 miles northeast of Anchorage, is the Glacier View River Retreat. On July 4th, they send cars hurtling off an enormous cliff overlooking the river. Crowds gather at the base of the cliff, and we’re not talking about spectators standing at a safe distance. Additionally, the vehicles aren’t launched using any fancy catapult system. The cars have their steering wheels secured, engines started, and transmissions engaged. They meet their ultimate fate at full power.

This year’s spectacle included more than a dozen vehicles, ranging from a Ford Taurus to a Dodge motorhome, as well as several unidentified vehicles. The exact number of cars launched and the size of the audience remains uncertain. This event takes place on private property and does not have official approval. In a recent Reddit post, someone mentioned potential attempts to shut down the event, describing the crowd as “chaotic.”

There are numerous videos showcasing this year’s launch on YouTube, and Glacier View River Retreat has shared a multitude of photos and videos on Facebook. To their credit, the organizers ensure that the crowd maintains a considerable distance from the impact zone. Furthermore, efforts are made to clean up the debris left behind. Two semi-trucks can be seen carrying the wrecked cars to be crushed, although there isn’t much left to crush. The measures taken to clean up any fluids in the area are unknown.

According to an event page on Facebook, admission to this year’s launch cost $20 for adults and $10 for children under 13. It was advertised as a “day of freedom, family, fun, faith, friends, and food.”

With cars containing flammable liquids catapulting off cliffs and engines roaring, smashing into pieces in front of a massive crowd… what could possibly go wrong?

Watch Audi RS E-Tron GT and Audi RS6 Performance Go Head to Head in Drag Race

Audi has ambitious plans to increase its production of battery-electric vehicles in the coming years. As the company ramps up its EV production, it is also showcasing its lineup of high-performance cars. In a new video, Audi pits its latest electric offering, the RS E-Tron GT, against its past performance powerhouse, the RS6 Performance, in a thrilling drag race.

The RS E-Tron GT boasts an impressive 637 horsepower, but its torque output falls a bit short at 604 pound-feet. Additionally, the electric sedan’s weight is on the heavier side, coming in at 5,169 pounds. Audi has also limited the car’s top speed to 155 miles per hour, but it compensates with a quicker acceleration time, reaching 62 mph in just 0.3 seconds faster than the RS6 Performance.

Tuner Transforms Mercedes-Benz S-Class Into Powerful SMN600 with 592 HP

German tuner, SMN Motors, is turning the current S-Class into a luxurious sport sedan capable of producing 592 horsepower (600 metric hp) and 605 pound-feet (820 Newton-meters) of torque. This impressive creation is known as the SMN600.

Starting with the S580 4Matic, the company enhances the power and performance. The base model already includes a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that generates 496 hp and 516 lb-ft. Although the specific tuning details aren’t mentioned, SMN Motors manages to boost the output by an additional 96 hp and 89 lb-ft. One significant modification is the installation of a stainless steel exhaust system equipped with a flap control system that synergizes with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) actuators.

Strong Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry Sales Show Sedans Aren’t Dead

Despite the growing popularity of SUVs and trucks, sedan sales have actually been on the rise. In the first half of the year, over 500,000 new sedans were purchased, with some models experiencing significant increases in sales.

Although the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord continue to dominate the segment, the Chevrolet Malibu has caught attention with its impressive sales numbers. Despite rumors of its discontinuation, the Malibu recorded 40,731 sales in the second quarter of 2023, marking a 25.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date sales for the Malibu have also increased by 34.4% from the previous year, making it the third best-selling vehicle in Chevrolet’s lineup.

While overall sedan sales were impacted by the supply-chain crisis of 2022, the surge in Malibu sales cannot be solely attributed to this. In fact, while Malibu sales are thriving, sales for the Equinox, another Chevrolet model, have dropped by almost 10%. It’s worth noting that the current-generation Malibu is already eight years old, with its last refresh occurring in 2019.

With other manufacturers like Ford and Buick discontinuing their sedan models, rumors of the Malibu’s demise seemed plausible. However, recent sales figures have led to speculation that a new model could arrive in 2025. When contacted, Chevrolet attributed the recent success of the Malibu to improved availability of parts and pent-up demand. However, the company declined to comment on the future of sedans in its lineup, considering the Malibu’s outselling of popular Chevrolet SUVs like the Tahoe, Traverse, Colorado, and Blazer.

Koenigsegg Gemera Getting Optional V8 Making 2,300 HP: Report

The Koenigsegg Gemera, which made its debut in March 2020, was initially announced to have a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine with three electric motors, producing a combined 1,700 horsepower and 2,581 pound-feet of torque. However, Koenigsegg secretly revealed a second engine option: a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8. This V8 engine increases the Gemera’s power output to 2,300 horsepower and 2,028 pound-feet of torque when using E85 fuel. Choosing the bigger V8 engine instead of the three-cylinder mill adds $400,000 to the price of the four-seat supercar. The V8 engine is paired with Koenigsegg’s nine-speed Light Speed Transmission.

Aside from the new engine option, there are other changes to the Gemera. Koenigsegg has replaced the original show car’s cameras with traditional side mirrors. The reason for this change is that the use of cameras is not yet legal in all markets, including the United States.

The Gemera also offers an optional Ghost Package, which includes an extended front splitter, S-duct, rear wing, and other aerodynamic tweaks. However, due to modifications made to the car’s nose, the storage space beneath the hood is no longer available.

Additionally, Koenigsegg is undergoing a factory expansion which will include a new assembly area, customer lounge, experience center, offices, event space, showroom, retail spaces, and additional warehouses. The automaker is also building an on-site test track as part of the expansion.
